How to Tell If a Song Is AI
How to tell if a song is AI: check Spotify badges and credits, look for the artist offline, listen closely, then run a free audio check on the song.
- Spotify's AI Persona badge
- Announced 2026-08-11 and shown from mid-September 2026. AI Persona means the artist disclosed it; Likely AI Persona means Spotify reviewed the profile and decided
- Verified by Spotify badge
- More than 300,000 artists verified by 2026-10-20; Spotify says it means a real, identifiable person is behind the music
- AI credits on Spotify
- Launched in April 2026; artists list which roles and instruments were made with AI, shown in Song Credits in the Now Playing view on mobile
- Deezer's AI tag
- Since 2025-06-20, Deezer tags albums that include fully AI-generated tracks
- Example of a release pattern
- The Velvet Sundown released three albums between 2025-06-05 and 2025-07-14
- Heavy Auto-Tune in our test
- Cher's Believe, T-Pain's Buy U a Drank and Daft Punk's One More Time all scored below 0.001 out of 1
- Our audio check, tested 2026-10-21
- 65 songs: 23 of 25 AI songs caught and 0 of 40 human songs flagged
- The Velvet Sundown
- Over 900,000 monthly Spotify listeners when its bio admitted AI in July 2025 (Rolling Stone)
- The audio check's answers
- Score 0 to 1: 0.8 or above Likely AI-generated, 0.2 or below Likely human-made, Can't tell in between; links use the official 30-second preview; files up to 5 minutes are analysed on your device and never uploaded; a Deezer AI label on the album counts as AI
- A part-AI song in the published test
- TaTa's Pulse (feat. Timbaland), built from human demos with a voice that came from Suno, scored below 0.001: Likely human-made
- Generators the audio check covers
- Suno up to version 5 and Udio up to version 1.5; Suno v6, launched 2026-09-09, is not tested yet
| Clue | Where to look | What points to AI | How much it tells you |
|---|---|---|---|
| The artist's own words | Bio, website, interviews, label announcements | The artist or label says the music is made with AI, as The Velvet Sundown's Spotify bio does | Settles it |
| AI Persona badge | Spotify artist profile (banner and About), Search, playlist track rows | An AI Persona or Likely AI Persona badge next to the name | Strong when present. No badge proves little: Spotify reviews the most-played profiles first |
| AI credits | Song Credits in the Spotify app; credits sent by the distributor | Vocals, instruments or other roles credited to AI | Strong when present, but disclosure is up to the artist |
| Deezer's AI tag | The album page on Deezer | A notice that the album includes AI-generated content | Strong, but it covers whole albums and only music on Deezer |
| Verified by Spotify badge | Spotify artist profile | No badge on an artist with a big audience | Weak alone. A badge points to a real, identifiable person |
| A life outside streaming | Concert listings, interviews, other credits, social accounts, photos | No shows, no named members, no history before the first release | Medium. New human artists can look the same |
| Release pattern | Discography on any streaming service | Albums weeks apart, or dozens of similar singles | Weak to medium. Some human producers release fast too |
| The sound and the lyrics | Good headphones, the whole song | Stock-phrase lyrics, a hazy or metallic top end, slurred consonants, a voice that never breathes | Weak. Mixing, compression and newer generators blur these |
| Audio fingerprint check | Our free checker: a song link, a title or your own file | Evenly spaced peaks between 1 and 8 kHz left by the decoders of AI music generators | Strong for Suno and Udio songs; can miss newer generators and part-AI songs |

Tested on 65 songs: none of the 40 human songs flagged as AI, 23 of 25 AI songs caught. How we tested
Here is how to tell if a song is AI in practice: start with the clues that cost nothing and say the most, then use your ears, then run an audio check. The table above ranks nine clues; the sections below explain how to use them.
Can you tell if a song is AI just by listening?
Not reliably. Your ears can raise a suspicion, but the AI songs that reached big audiences sounded like ordinary rock, country, soul or gospel. The Velvet Sundown had over 900,000 monthly Spotify listeners by the time its bio admitted the music was made with AI. Better evidence sits around the song: what the artist and the platforms say, and what an audio check finds.
So when you want to know how to tell if a song is AI, treat listening as the start of the check, not the end. Combine several clues from the table, and give the most weight to the ones at the top.
Start with what the artist and the platforms say
The first step in how to tell if a song is AI is the artist's profile, not the sound. On Spotify, look for an AI Persona badge and open the song credits for AI credits. On Deezer, look for the AI tag on the album. If the artist's own bio says the music is made with AI, that settles the question, whatever the song sounds like.
- AI Persona badge. Spotify began showing it in mid-September 2026. Tap it to see whether the artist disclosed it (AI Persona) or Spotify decided after a review (Likely AI Persona). Spotify says the badge describes the artist's identity, not how the music was made.
- Verified by Spotify. The opposite signal: Spotify gives it to artists with a real, identifiable person behind the music.
- AI credits. Since April 2026, artists can list which roles and instruments were made with AI. Disclosure is voluntary, so an empty credit proves nothing.
- Deezer's AI tag. Since June 2025, Deezer tags albums that include fully AI-generated tracks.
- The bio. The Velvet Sundown's Spotify bio calls the band a synthetic music project made with the support of AI. Read the full story.
Look for a life outside streaming
Human artists leave traces: concerts, interviews, credits on other people's records, photos from real places, a history before the first release. Many reported AI acts have little or none of that. Breaking Rust topped a Billboard download chart in November 2025, yet when Billboard asked the songwriter credited on its hit for comment, it heard nothing back.
Check the release pattern too. The Velvet Sundown put out three albums between June 5 and July 14, 2025. A sound-alike of a known band under a new name is another warning sign: Rolling Stone Australia reported that Bleeding Verse, whose Spotify bio says it turns human lyrics into songs with AI, overtook the Welsh band Holding Absence that it cites as an influence.
But a thin footprint isn't proof on its own. Plenty of human artists are new, anonymous or use an avatar.
What an AI-generated song can sound like
There is no reliable listening test. People often point to lyrics built from stock phrases, a hazy or metallic shimmer in the cymbals and high end, and vocals that slur consonants or never seem to breathe. These are worth noticing, but heavy mixing, low-bitrate streams and newer generators can produce or remove each of them.
Listen on headphones to the whole song rather than a clip, and compare it with the artist's other songs. Treat anything you notice as a reason to check further, not as an answer.
What is not a sign of an AI-generated song
Heavy Auto-Tune, vocoders, electronic production and a polished country or gospel sound are not signs of AI by themselves. In the checker's published 65-song test, Cher's Believe, T-Pain's Buy U a Drank and Daft Punk's One More Time all scored below 0.001 on the audio check, the far human end of the scale. So did human country, soul and gospel songs chosen to sound like the AI ones.
Being new, being anonymous or having a sudden hit isn't proof either. Treat those as reasons to look closer, not as answers.
How to tell if a song is AI with an audio check
Run the song through an audio check that looks for the fingerprint AI music generators leave in the sound. The free AI song checker on this site does this in your browser: paste a Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube or Deezer song link, type the title and artist, or upload a file. In its published test of 65 songs it caught 23 of 25 AI songs and flagged none of the 40 human songs.
It works because generators such as Suno and Udio build the sound with a neural decoder that leaves evenly spaced peaks between 1 and 8 kHz, a trace Deezer's researchers described in 2025 (Afchar et al.). You can't hear it, but a small model can measure it and score it from 0 to 1:
- 0.8 or above: Likely AI-generated.
- 0.2 or below: Likely human-made, meaning no known AI fingerprint was found.
- In between: Can't tell.
If Deezer has tagged the album as AI, the checker says so and counts it. For links it analyses the official 30-second preview; your own files are analysed in full, up to 5 minutes, and never leave your device.
Know its blind spots. It covers Suno up to version 5 and Udio up to version 1.5. Suno released v6 on September 9, 2026, and the checker hasn't been tested on it yet. Songs that are only partly AI, such as an AI voice over human production, usually come back Likely human-made; TaTa's Pulse did in the test. The accuracy report lists every test song and score.
What to do with the answer
Weigh the clues together. An artist who says the music is AI, an AI Persona badge or a Deezer tag settles most cases, and a high audio score backs them up. If all you have is a hunch or a single score, say that, rather than calling the song AI, because a wrong accusation can stick to a real artist.
The list of AI artists shows which acts have been identified so far and how their songs scored. If you make music and worry about being flagged, read the guide for artists.
Frequently asked questions
What is the quickest way to tell if a song is AI?
Open the artist's profile: look for an AI Persona badge on Spotify, read the bio and the song credits, and check Deezer for an AI tag. Then run the song through the checker above.
Can Spotify tell me if a song is AI?
Partly. The AI Persona badge says the artist's identity is AI-generated, and AI credits show what the artist chose to disclose. Spotify says the badge is about identity, not about how the music was made.
Does Auto-Tune mean a song is AI?
No. Auto-Tune is a vocal effect that human artists have used for decades. In the published test, heavily tuned songs by Cher and T-Pain scored at the far human end.
Can an AI song checker be wrong?
Yes. The checker on this site missed 2 of 25 AI songs in testing, can miss new generators and part-AI songs, and a small test can't rule out rare false alarms. Use it as one clue among several.
